Lenten Carbon Fast 2020 ~ 5th Saturday

Pray for all the living things that rely the Earth

Care for Creation Prayer

God, our Creator, You have given us the earth, the sky and the seas. Show us the way to care for the earth, not just for today but for ages to come. Let no plan or work of ours damage or destroy the beauty of your creation. Send forth your spirit to direct us, to care for the earth and all creation. Amen.

Earth, Teach Me

Earth teach me quiet ~ as the grasses are still with new light. Earth teach me suffering ~ as old stones suffer with memory. Earth teach me humility ~ as blossoms are humble with beginning. Earth teach me caring ~ as mothers nurture their young. Earth teach me courage ~ as the tree that stands alone. Earth teach me limitation ~ as the ant that crawls on the ground. Earth teach me freedom ~ as the eagle that soars in the sky. Earth teach me acceptance ~ as the leaves that die each fall. Earth teach me renewal ~ as the seed that rises in the spring. Earth teach me to forget myself ~ as melted snow forgets its life.

Both these prayers are reproduced with kind permission of Trócaire. They can be found in Trócaire’s Up To Us—Connecting for Creation resource.

Ezekiel 36:8-15

Ezekiel 36

8But you, mountains of Israel, you will sprout branches and bear fruit for my people Israel, for they are coming soon. 9Look! I am for you! I will turn my face toward you; you will be plowed and planted. 10Upon you I will multiply the whole house of Israel; cities shall be resettled and ruins rebuilt. 11Upon you I will multiply people and animals so they can multiply and be fruitful. I will resettle you as in the past, and make you more prosperous than at your beginning; then you shall know that I am the LORD.12Upon you I will have them walk, my people Israel. They shall possess you, and you shall be their heritage. Never again shall you rob them of their children.13Thus says the Lord GOD: Because they say of you, “You devour your own people, you rob your nation of its children,” 14therefore, you shall never again devour your people or rob your nation of its children—oracle of the Lord GOD. 15I will no longer make you listen to the reproach of nations. You will never again endure insults from the peoples. Never again shall you rob your nation of its children—oracle of the Lord GOD.

Luke 24:44-53

Luke 24

44He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. 46 And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day 47and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49And [behold] I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”50 Then he led them [out] as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them. 51As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven. 52They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53and they were continually in the temple praising God.

Psalm 130

Psalms 130

1A song of ascents.Out of the depths I call to you, LORD;2Lord, hear my cry!May your ears be attentiveto my cry for mercy.3If you, LORD, keep account of sins,Lord, who can stand?4But with you is forgivenessand so you are revered.5I wait for the LORD,my soul waitsand I hope for his word.6My soul looks for the Lordmore than sentinels for daybreak.More than sentinels for daybreak,7let Israel hope in the LORD,For with the LORD is mercy, with him is plenteous redemption,8And he will redeem Israelfrom all its sins.
