Make sure any Easter chocolate you purchase is fair-trade, supporting cocoa farmers in less wealthy parts of the world
“Really,” you may be thinking, “how is a chocolate bunny that I give to my child going to make a difference when the climate crisis we all face looms so large?” Perhaps you have thoughts more along the lines of “isn’t it worse to purchase items produced from remote locations requiring more transportation?”
Consider each step we try on during our Lenten Carbon Fast is there to shine a spotlight on our daily tasks. So many of these tasks are from long formed habits that we perform with little to no thought required. Your participation in carbon fast action steps offers an opportunity to begin breaking up these habits and raise awareness to our otherwise mundane tasks.
The Fairtrade International video below takes us through the growing struggles of small farmers from these poorer parts of the world.
Fairtrade International teamed up with Gold Standard and producer groups to develop the Fairtrade Climate Standard. Through projects such as reforestation or energy-efficient cookstoves, vulnerable communities can reduce emissions and become eligible for carbon credits while also strengthening themselves against the effects of climate change.
