WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING PRAYER
God of life, present and promised, you are the One to whom we call: for you are the One who hears, and you are the One who acts, bringing us new life with your grace and love and power. Lead us in our time of worship, that we may be prepared to follow your lead in places where life is at risk—places where hope seems far away, places where dreams die during sleep. When we leave these walls, help us live the teachings we proclaim within this place of worship, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP L: Our lives feel all disjointed as though they were a valley of dry bones.

L: The Spirit of God breathes hope into each one of us.

L: Open our hearts, Lord, and bring us to your light.

PRAISE “Spirit of the Living God, Fall Afresh on Me” UMH #393

SCRIPTURE Ezekiel 37:1-14

SPECIAL MUSIC

SERMON “Can These Bones Live?”

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Forgive us, O God, when we see the world through rose-colored glasses rather than as it really is, much less the way you seek it to be. Forgive us, Holy One, when we forsake lively and risky faith calling us to be agents of change in our world for the bland conviction that all will be well. Renew us with your grace and ground us with your Spirit, that we might be empowered to live,

in word and deed, as testimonies to the power of your love over the grave. In Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE Christ came to lead us in paths of righteousness and to guide us through our lives. Christ is with us in times of danger and times of peace. The goodness and mercy of God are given to us each and every day of our lives. God forgives us for our failings, upholds us in love, and leads us to the place that Christ has prepared for us. Believe in your heart that God loves you and forgives you. We believe! God help our unbelief!

The God we serve is the God of life, the God of hope, the God of new beginnings— even for dried-up bones and shattered dreams. That rattling of bones in Ezekiel’s vision may be heard as the shackles that once held us down in fear, sin, prejudice, and guilt. God defies these deadly entanglements with the power of life. This we trust, and by this we live. Thanks be to God!

Ezekiel 37:1-14

NABRE

Ezekiel 37

1The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he led me out in the spirit of the LORD and set me in the center of the broad valley. It was filled with bones. 2He made me walk among them in every direction. So many lay on the surface of the valley! How dry they were! 3He asked me: Son of man, can these bones come back to life? “Lord GOD,” I answered, “you alone know that.” 4Then he said to me: Prophesy over these bones, and say to them: Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Listen! I will make breath enter you so you may come to life. 6I will put sinews on you, make flesh grow over you, cover you with skin, and put breath into you so you may come to life. Then you shall know that I am the LORD. 7I prophesied as I had been commanded. A sound started up, as I was prophesying, rattling like thunder. The bones came together, bone joining to bone. 8As I watched, sinews appeared on them, flesh grew over them, skin covered them on top, but there was no breath in them. 9Then he said to me: Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man! Say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD: From the four winds come, O breath, and breathe into these slain that they may come to life. 10I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath entered them; they came to life and stood on their feet, a vast army. 11He said to me: Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel! They are saying, “Our bones are dried up, our hope is lost, and we are cut off.” 12Therefore, prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD: Look! I am going to open your graves; I will make you come up out of your graves, my people, and bring you back to the land of Israel. 13You shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and make you come up out of them, my people! 14I will put my spirit in you that you may come to life, and I will settle you in your land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD. I have spoken; I will do it—oracle of the LORD.

Closing song “Close to Thee” UMH #407

1. Thy my everlasting portion More than friend or life to me All alone my pilgrim journey Saviour let me walk with Thee

Close to Thee, close to Thee Close to Thee, close to Thee All alone my pilgrim journey Saviour let me walk with Thee

2. Not for easy wordly pleasure Nor for fame my prayer shall be Gladly will I toil and suffer Only let me walk with Thee

Close to Thee, close to Thee Close to Thee, close to Thee Gladly will I toil and suffer Only let me walk with Thee

3. Lead me through the veil of shadows Bear me o’er life’s fitful sea Then the gate of life eternal May I enter Lord with Thee

Close to Thee, close to Thee Close to Thee, close to Thee Then the gate of life eternal May I enter Lord with Thee
